Had a nice easy day in the lab today. Now we’re back home from watching "Beowulf". Its a good movie but symptomatic of a type I don’t like very much. I would have liked it better if they had called it "Wulfgar" or something. They took a lot of liberties with the Beowulf storyline. It fleshed out the story a lot, made it hang together nicely and tightened the plot and all that but it wasn’t Beowulf. And thats the point. Leave the original alone and do your own thing, even if it is "based on" Beowulf. I can only imagine some kid somewhere getting their exam answers worng based on watching the movie instead of reading the story. It would have been just as good (and just as well attended in our Cinema) even without the famous title. I use famous loosely since Suzanne didn’t seem to have heard of it before the movie came out, which just leands weight to my argument that they should have made it their own. And the ending! I am sick of endings "leaving things hanging". Theres a good reason classic stories end with "they all lived happily ever after". Resolution is good. No, its not that I didn’t like the movie, just that I think it some small changes (title, ending) could have made it better.
