Reaching Across

We went to see “Jack Reacher” yesterday. I wanted to compare it to “Alex Cross”. Suzanne hadn’t wanted to watch it, based on the trailer, but at the end said it was quite good.

The actors in both movies are fine and the story in Cross is more complex but the simpler Reacher tale is more believable. (Keeping in mind that both are action movie stories.) Some of the pacing in Cross is a bit off compared to its emotional content but this emotional content, which most action movies including Reacher just don’t manage, gives it the gravitas to make the stories even as well.

The videography in Alex Cross ruined it, however. I hate “shaky cam”. No, it doesn’t add drama or action to the fight scenes. It just makes them hard to watch. Very, very hard to watch. And if I’m going to an action movie I want to see action. Not out-of-focus jumpiness. So Jack Reacher wins not for being a better movie than any other action movie, but for being a good movie where “Alex Cross” shot itself in the foot.
